Biography

Richard is the August von Hofmann Professor of Chemistry and the Director of Innovation at the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London. He trained as a physicist, worked on the behaviour of cell membranes which apparently makes you a chemist. Over the past 13 years he has turned his attention to supporting and accelerating the growth of the low carbon economy. In 2010, he co-founded the Climate-KIC, Europe’s largest partnership of businesses and universities working on climate change innovations. He ran the UK centre and the European Education programme. His proudest achievement is to have helped 64 new climate tech businesses raise over $1/4bn over the past 8 years. Since his return to Imperial he has been a member of the London Sustainable Development Commission, advising successive Mayors on the development of London as a major hub for climate tech.

Married, with four sons and three step daughters, he enjoys the countryside, reading and good food.
